What is Love?  These words, taken from Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, are the focus of the second concert in our 2018-2019 season. And what a wealth of songs we had to choose from!

Intimate poems penned by Eric Whitacre’s former lover are the text of his haunting work, Five Hebrew Love Songs

Love for the divine is expressed in Tallis’s perfect motet If Ye Love Me, Villet’s Hymn de la Vièrge, Rachmaninov’s Bogoritse Devo, and Rheinberger’s Abendlied.

Love for a child is highlighted in Golden Slumbers Kiss Your Eyes, part of Stephen Chatman’s Elizabethan Summer song cycle; and two beautiful love poems by WB Yeats, The Cloths of Heaven and Innisfree are brought to life by Mark Sirett and Michael McGlynn.

That first blush of new love is captured by Claude Debussy’s impressionist painting of Dieu! Qu’il La Fait Bon Regardez and the bittersweet of love lost is heard in Underneath the Stars by Kate Rusby.  Rounding out the program are Rutter’s settings of three traditional songs: The Girl I Left Behind Me, O Waly Waly and Dashing Away with the Smoothing Iron.
