The Play's The Thing
2016 marks the four hundredth anniversary of the death of arguably the English language’s most famous and influential playwright and poet, William Shakespeare. We at Strata are celebrating the only way we know how…. with a delightful concert of songs set to his words. Shakespearean phrases have not just been absorbed into our everyday parlance, but also have inspired a wealth of beautiful music.
Jaakko Mäntyjärvi’s Four Shakespeare Songs are a stunning example, as are John Tavener’s Song for Athene and Nils Lindberg’s Shall I Compare Thee to a Summer’s Day. Songs by Ralph Vaughan Williams, Havergal Brian and Canadian Stephen Chatman are also featured. And it doesn’t end there! Shakespeare’s plot lines have been used over and over again as a basis for musicals. In that vein, we will sing selections from West Side Story, Kiss Me Kate, and The Boys from Syracuse to round out the afternoon.
