In Remembrance

Sunday November 13, 2011 at 3 pm MacNeill Baptist Church
Tickets $20

Our first concert of the 2011-2012 season is timed for Remembrance Day reflections. We will bring you traditional fare like that of Randall Thompson, Johannes Brahms, Peter Aston, or Canadian Stephanie Martin, as well as some jazz arrangements of some of the popular songs of the war years. Joining us for this concert will be What the Folk, a group of folk musicians equally at home in concert or in your local pub. Look for their lively vocals and accomplished instrumentals.

What the Folk
Terry Ball and his sons Geoff, Graeme and Len have been singing and playing together for as long as they can remember. In 2004, Carolyn Reid added flute and a female voice to the mix, and What The Folk was created. Soon afterwards, singer and fiddler Caroline Olsen joined this band of classically trained musicians who each perform with a wide range of other musical groups.

What The Folk’s traditional (and not-so-traditional!) Canadian, Scottish, Irish and English repertoire is inspired by legends such as Eric Bogel, Great Big Sea, Stan Rogers, The Irish Descendants, The Arrogant Worms, Simon and Garfunkel, Peter Paul & Mary, and James Gordon to name just a few. Their vocal and instrumental talents have attracted a growing number of fans and supporters through appearances at fundraisers, pub nights, weddings, and folk clubs in the Hamilton and surrounding area.

When not playing music or singing, which isn't very often, the group’s interests include travel, spending time with their friends and families, and of course, imbibing only the finest quality ales.

We are going to repeat our Strata variety show for our Christmas concert, since last year’s concert was so much fun! We will be showcasing the many talents, singing and otherwise, that our Strata personnel have. What the Folk will again join us and we will also feature some instrumentals and vocal solos on the seasonal theme. There will also be a few carols to sing-along for our audience. All proceeds from the concert admission will go to Wesley Urban Ministries to support the valuable work that they do in our Hamilton community.

Tales of Earth and Sky
Sunday April 22, 2012 at 3 pm
MacNeill Baptist Church,
Tickets $20

In celebration of Earth Day (Apr 22!), we decided to craft a program called Tales of Earth and Sky. Central to the theme is the Eric Whitacre composition Leonardo Dreams of His Flying Machine, a choral depiction of the sounds of flight in his imagined flying machine. Also featured is Vaughan Williams’ Shakespeare Songs, Stanford’s The Bluebird, and Canadian composer Ruth Watson Henderson’s depiction of Pauline Johnson’s poem The Song My Paddle Sings. We invite you to mark your calendars to join us for this varied and colourful concert.
